[43th Thread: Did Makkah exist on Ptolemy map & succeeding maps?]

This doubt is mostly raised by those who're influenced by Revisionist school & Crone book "Mecca Trade & rise of Islam".

But upon research, it's proven that Makkah had existed on Ptolemy map(in Geographia).

Firstly, Ptolemy map is less accurate when locating places farther away from Greek & Roman world.
He didn't mention South part of Africa & drew Sri Lanka quite large than it'd be. Similarly, in the case of Arabia, he divided the region in 3 separate maps :- Arabia Petraea(the
2/
area ruled by Romans from Petra), Arabia Felix(South including Oman, Yemen)& Arabia Deserta(the desert area).
Ptolemy made Felix part larger than it'd have been as this part was very important to Romans & squeezed the Deserta into smaller areas.

Makkah is in Felix.
3/
Ppl like @Aabhas24 denied Makkah to be the birthplace of Prophet Muhammad(s) as it's no mentions in earlier accounts.

He brought Münster map as an evidence which was published in Basle,1571 based on Ptolemy description of Arabia but this map
4/ https://mobile.twitter.com/Aabhas24/status/1345262286718451718?s=19
didn't mention many cities like Lathrippa, Carna & even Macoraba.
He did mention Thebe which some scholars think as Makkah but the correct transcription is Macoraba, universally admitted to be the ancient classical representative of the modern Makkah in Academia.

Earlier maps
5/
like "The Sixth Asian Map, depicting Arabia Felix, 1478" depicted Macoraba{Makkah}(below Manitae, Image 1& 2)

Another map of same title who was published in 1525,Strasbourg also mentioned Macoraba (Images 3&4)

All these maps are drawn based on Plotemy Geographia of Arabia.
6/
In Muslim literature Habash, Buzjani were the earliest Geographers who came close to latitude used by Plotemy.

It'd be noted that Ptolemy wrote longitude first & then latitude. Knowing this, the location mentioned by al-Khawarizmi ~matches with Ptolemy keeping the bewritten
7/
of Long & Lat similarly to Ptolemy[but not exact name of Macoraba{which may changed to Arabic name Makkah by that time}]

P : Long.20°Lat 73° K : 21°67°

Ptolemy also listed Macoraba as a location en the inland{from Red Sea}(interior)which corresponds to 48:24 describing
8/
Makkah city within a valley{ببطن مكّة}.

Someone may object to the accuracy by saying that there is Betius river near it which isnt found on current maps.
This objection can be refuted on following points

1. in Periplus Maris Erythraei, written between (40-70)AD before Ptolemy
9/
mentioned of no river. Rather, he mentioned men living in villages & nomadic camps which is instrinsic to desert places like Makkah. What more interesting is he called Carnaties(Kinanah)from whom quraysh is descended from whose is Banu Hashim, the tribe of prophet Muhammad(s)
10/
2. James Playfair in his book mentioned that the river of Betius was composed of 2 small streams called Bardilloi.
Bardilloi is the modern representative of the Betius, is proved by the fact that it is the only stream of the Hijaz whose waters falls into Red Sea at Jiddah.
11/
3. Prof.Robinson in book of Foster mentioned Betius flumen(streams) as water of raining water which flew off.

4. As mentioned above,Ptolemy unnecessarily thought of Arabia Felix larger than it'd be & thus he pushed few places towards North while Macoraba & Betius must locate
12/
towards south.

Ammianus Marcellenius mentioned Makkah as Gaepolis(or Hierapolis{holy city})which according to Bowersock is Makkah.

More ancient evidence of Ka'bah or place around it is mentioned by Diodorus in his Bibliotheca historica in which he mentioned it as temple.
13/
Then, we've Biblical references to Makkah as Paran & Ka'bah as Bacca.

ARGUMENT :-
Crone in her analysis tried to refute Macoraba as Makkah based on linguistic assumption. She said Macoraba is derived from Makka-Rabba which means 'Great Makkah'.

CRITIQUE:-
The correct
14/
translation should be 'Lord's Makkah' as the root "mkk" means *house* in Babylonian & "Rabba" means *Lord or Allah* in southern Arabic. The linguistic structure is a possessive form & not a derivative one.

Also, names of old cities don't reflect the language of their ppl.
15/
For ex - Egypt is a Semitic name meaning the dividing border
between two lands. Egypt is also derived from Greek
word Aeguptus meaning the fertile
land.If then the Arabic name of Egypt is of a Semitic
origin, its name in modern European languages is of Greek
origin.
16/
The word "Misr" even goes back as far as 14th cen. BC.
[Ignoring the details here]

Point is @Aabhas24 depended on Holland view to conclude Makkah was 1st mentioned in 741AD. But Holland put it in Mesopotamia, not Hijaz. His lack of linguistical

And historical acumen, ignorance of latest researches & making wild guesses put him as an amateur researcher who espoused Crone ideas & pushing them with his dependence on secondary sources & extraordinary claims.

But, extraordinary claims require extra evidence ...

END!
The Makkah Map doubt which aabhas mentioned in 741AD is being refuted here.
