Just in case any of my Black and POC student colleagues need to hear this YOU DO NOT NEED to give up your time and peace for academia, professional societies, etc.'s DEI initiatives WHEN THEY ARE NOT willing to compensate you for your time, knowledge & lived experiences.

When you do & should ask for a check if the response is anything other than "what's your rate?" do not waste your time. Keep in mind that your time is valuable and if they didn't think so they wouldn't have asked for it in the 1st place & therefore YOU should be compensated!

Here are some common responses I've gotten when asked for compensation for my time and work...
"We are all volunteers" =/= those who have faced the brunt of your orgs racism and oppression now "need" to volunteer their time & relive trauma to solve the systems' failure - NO

"We need to start somewhere/ we all have other things on top of fixing DEI issues" 1st of all WE ALL HAVE OTHER THINGS to do and one person's life situations don't have precedent over another. 2nd it's not just an "issue" it is an inherent part of the system.

"We don't have a budget for that" well if you *actually* cared about changing the narrative and breaking down the system which upholds these narrative you would, could, should find the budget for it bc it's not going to fix itself.

my one free advice for those orgs, schools, etc. who esp. ask Black and POC students to solve/promote DEI initiatives STOP expecting us to do it for FREE or at all, HIRE A PROFESSIONAL, & food for thought go ask those old white guys who have never had DEI cross their minds!
