Bandcamp is great. My concern is that it is an aging community, kindof like a suburb. It flatters a romantic association with record store culture I fear I do not share with anyone under 25. Far preferable to the streaming mistake, but a bandaid in lieu of something more dynamic.
On the one hand it is comforting to enter a realm where ppl can appreciate the latest ambient releases or w/e as one might have done 20 years ago but with that comfort comes the looming dread of irrelevancy
Reminds me a little of the bougie “digital detox” movement amongst gen-x and older millennials. Meanwhile the kids are like “we are on a hamster wheel of mandatory social engagement for basic needs and this kindof retreat to simpler times isn’t helping”
Also perhaps comparable to the cloying post-exit developer trend of advocating for a slower and more mindful internet that sounds beautiful but is often just describing the advantage of settling down and suburbanizing with cash as connections in the bank
