Tonye was a self employed business man. He ran a poultry and supplied chicken 
to a lot of restaurants.
He also supplied eggs too.
He was doing well by all standards and he had just clocked 37.
He lived in Lagos and practically was almost always on the road

He was driving home one evening and was stuck in traffic.
He had been in one spot for about 2hrs 45 mins. Then the headache started. It was pounding.
A pharmacy was just nearby. He branched and got some paracetamol.
‘Why don’t you check your BP? It is free’ the Pharmacist

‘Ok’ Tonye replied and sat down.
The cuff of the BP machine was applied and inflated.
‘Your blood pressure reading is quite high’
‘What is it ?’ Tonye asked
‘180/125 mmHg’
‘What does that mean? Am I dying?’
‘It means you should see your doctor ASAP!’

‘Once I rest like this, I go dey alright ‘ Tonye replied.
The doctor continued ‘ you need to have these meds to control the blood pressure. At this level, you are a ticking time bomb. And you also need to do some investigations for us to evaluate you properly’

‘Ok. Dockay. Una too dey fear. I go come next week. Make I go drink herbs for house wey go bring am down’ Tonye adding with a hilarious laughter and left the consultation room.

It was a calm evening in the hospital when the doctor heard ‘emergency! Emergency! ‘
He quickly dashed out to the accident and emergency.
He gasped when he saw Tonye on the stretcher. His friends were all confused.

while he wore his gloves, and started Tonye on oxygen and the other doctors began checking him.
‘We were just chilling in the sitting room playing video games when he shouted his head and then slumped.
Since then he has not answered us’ one of the friends answered

‘ He has had a stroke and he needs to do an urgent brain CT scan. He will need ICU care until he gets out of coma’
‘Wow! They all chorused.
‘Is it that serious?’ They asked
‘Yes it is! ‘ the doctor replied.
‘Mehn!’ one of them replied
‘Wow! They all chorused.

Tonye died a few days later in the ICU. He had suffered a massive intracranial bleeding ( bleeding into the brain) which was confirmed by the CT scan he did on arrival in the hospital.

His brother sobbed as they moved his body from the hospital enroute the morgue.

It hits without warning most times and the damage is usually irreparable just like we have seen.
Stick to your doctor’s or healthcare provider advice.
Ask any questions and seek clarifications that you need.

He will usually adjust the dose or change the drug with another.
Don’t just stop on your own accord.
Remember that hypertension is not a death sentence as it can be managed well.
