Respectfully have to disagree
Queer roles shouldnt be reduced as mere contests of skill where only the most qualified are allowed to play. https://twitter.com/boyslovephp/status/1345775957202780161

The call for queer people to play queer characters didnt come from a vaccuum. Have u seen the BL industry? Where prolly 90% of the actors portraying lgbt characters are cisgender straights? Dont you guys already see the problem in that?
Here's an analogy outside of the lgbt sphere. Say there are two people applying for a high-level job at a museum dedicated for the artifacts of an indigenous group. Candidate A is a member of that indigenous people but only has a masteral. Candidate B is a foreigner with a PhD.
Candidate A was born and raised in the culture displayed on the museum, having personally used the artifacts himself as part of his daily life. Candidate B knows how to use them too, but strictly for academic purposes.
So, imagine candidate A not getting the job even tho he is part of the community simply because he isnt qualified enough. Candidate B, a complete foreigner, gets to be the one who showcases Candidate A's own culture to the rest of the world.
Now, switch Candidate A to an LGBT actor and Candidate B to a straight actor. And that indigenous culture as the experiences we have as members of the LGBT community. Do u guys see the issue?
So don't reduce queer roles as mere jobs na up for grabs for anyone who so desires. To the straight actors, it's an opportunity to show their skills and earn money. To queer actors, it's a chance to give a nuanced portrayal of the experience we've had as part of the community.
Honestly, I have no hate for straight actors who are true allies. At the same time, I dislike queer actors who fail to provide accurate representation of our struggles or make profit off of the stereotypes that are harmful to the community.
I just don't want people carelessly throwing around this idea na, at this point in time, a queer role is just a job. In an ideal world, sure. But right now we're still struggling for representation and normalcy.
So let's not kid ourselves into thinking na there's equal opportunity for the straight vs queer actor. No, not right now. Especially under capitalism where marketability is still a major factor. Rant over.
