1/6 It is a Cold. Hard. Terrifying. Truth that the situation is now worse than April.

Full lockdown will allow the NHS to recover some capacity. It will facilitate the rollout of vaccination to those at highest risk. Older people first.
2/6The brightest educational minds should be immediately tasked with how society can minimise and mitigate the harms that will be done to the most disadvantaged children. Those for whom school is a haven of safety and security.
3/6 Similarly, an invested and meaningful effort is required to ameliorate the devastating effects of lockdown on other vulnerable groups. Older people for whom this means (more) isolation. Loneliness. Poverty.

And those for whom home is not ‘safe’.
4/6 The <1yr Oxford and Pfizer vaccine development has demonstrated remarkable innovation. Greatness. We are not lacking brilliance; just look at the wonders that are @IndependentSage and @CMO_England
5/6 The loss of grandparents, loved ones is too high a price. Grief never leaves. The realities of this are not best voiced on twitter.

We have fallen far enough. Half measures don’t measure up.
6/6 The way forward demands strong, accountable, scientifically informed leadership to arrest this tragedy and prepare for, mitigate, and repair where possible, the now heartbreaking inevitable secondary harms that will ensue.

This shall remain a shameful chapter in our history
