Mike is a good reporter, but I disagree with this article. Drafting Wentz and signing him to an extension isn’t “supporting him”, especially when you ignore the long list of things the Eagles did that understandably pissed Wentz off, extending back multiple years. https://twitter.com/mike_e_kaye/status/1345784833746886656
Some of the things that frustrated Wentz were outside of the Eagles control. They weren’t responsible for Wentz getting hurt and Foles having success in his absence. So you cannot fault the Eagles there. But there is a laundry list of issues we need to acknowledge
2018: Wentz rushes back from injury. Plays half the season with a broken back. Wentz clearly wasn’t himself. Then the team’s top WR, Alshon Jeffery, crushes him in a story published by a national ESPN reporter. Wentz gets hurt. Foles leads the team to the playoffs again.
That offseason, another bombshell report comes out that crucifies Wentz. This time, multiple teammates rip him. To make matters worse, the Eagles don’t show Jeffery, the impetus behind both reports, the door. Instead, they give him an extension! Is that supporting him?
Wentz enters 2019 with huge question marks. Foles is gone. The team is beset by injuries. Roseman does a terrible job building the roster. And questions grow on whether the Eagles made the right decision keeping Wentz over Foles. Then another Jeffery report on Wentz drops
Wentz shakes it off. Leads a team filled with practice squad players to an improbable 4-0 record to make the playoffs. He finally gets the monkey off his back and proves he can lead the team. He enters 2020 as the leader. But it’s clear the team needs to upgrade the WR position
So what does Roseman do? He doesn’t sign any veteran WRs. He passes on trading for Hopkins and Diggs. And he drafts Reagor over Jefferson, after previously taking JJAW over Metcalf. He doesn’t make a single other meaningful investment in WR, instead relying on Jeffery and D Jax.
To compound this issue, Roseman spends a premium draft pick on Jalen Hurts. Wentz finally escaped from the shadow of Nick Foles, and instead of using that pick to help him win you draft someone who could challenge his job? Is that supporting Wentz?
So how does 2020 go? D Jax and Jeffery are hurt, leaving Wentz to play with young, inexperienced, and largely talentless wide receivers for the third time in his five year career. The offensive line is decimated. The coaching staff lost its way. And Wentz plays like crap.
It bears repeating that Wentz played like crap in 2020. But he wasn’t put in a situation to succeed. Roseman did a terrible job building the team around him. And manufactured another QB controversy by using a premium pick on Wentz’s backup.
Is Wentz without fault? Of course not.

Could he play better? Absolutely.

But did the Eagles support him and put him in a position to be successful? No. They did not.
A final thought. Too often we look at football players as robots and ignore that they are human beings with emotions and egos, just like us. If you were Wentz, would you just “shut up and play?” Or would you understandably be frustrated by this entire situation?
