The numbers (and my eyes) do not lie: Utah gives up offensive rebounds at a 33.5% clip, which is not only the worst of ANY of Larry's Utah teams (including his first year), but is the worst OR% of any Utah team going as far back as Ken Pom data goes (the late Majerus years).
Utah's rebounding woes are compounded by two things:
(1) Larry's teams have historically never collected a lot of offensive rebounds because he emphasizes transition defense over offensive rebounding opportunities. Simply put, we don't go after offensive boards.
(2) Because of Utah's abnormally low eFG% this season, there are a lot more rebounds to be had when Utah is offense.
Utah actually has a TO% this season (so far) of 14.0%, which ranks 7th nationally. This is EASILY the best mark of a Larry K team in this category. We are not turning the ball over, which is great. But this gain is more than offset by our terrible eFG% (see next tweet)
Utah's eFG% this season (to date) is 47.5%, which is the 2nd worst of any of Larry's Utah teams (2012) and the 2nd worst of any Utah team in Ken Pom's database, going back to early Majerus years. Utah had 61 shots to USC's 47 ... and lost by 20.
I'd like to see more of the Pelle, Martinez, Timmy, Jantunen, Battin lineup. I (will have to check) but believe that was the lineup that got us back in the game at the end of 1st half yesterday. If we're going to play undersized minutes at 4/5, we need more size at the 1/2.
