I worked with Josh Hawley for a year. He seemed like a nice guy, which just goes to show you that our civility norms need to be less about whether someone is nice and more about whether they’d lead a coup to overturn a democratic election. https://twitter.com/HawleyMO/status/1345426114538307584
I was one of the only people at SCOTUS that year who only had degrees from state schools and *I* know and acknowledge that I’ve had elite experiences that wildly separate me from the average person.
His fact-denying Stanford/Yale-attending wealthy ass has been lying to everyone from the get go, and yet in elite circles they’re going to all pretend it’s fine because he can ask how you’re doing and what’s up with your kids.
He’s a fascist charlatan who convinces people that it’s bravery to refuse to face truth, because he doesn’t want to admit how much of a coward he is.
And too many people are just going to let him do it, because it’s too uncomfortable for them to actually call him what he is.
We are facing a coup because too many people with a little bit of power don’t want to face the stigma of being difficult for saying, “why are you lying?” to someone who is inventing fiction to bring down a democratic election.
I'm just gonna add: There are at least some elite lawyers who are keeping quiet because going against a powerful senator on this one may mean they can kiss all chances of judicial nominations goodbye.
It is my very studied opinion that cowardice should not be considered a prerequisite for nomination to an office with immense power and lifelong tenure.
