1. I believe Dan Mullen will listen to overtures about coaching positions like he has for his entire career to date. He's been remarkably open about having his ears open!
2. As @Year2 has pointed out, he's been a perennial candidate for a lot of jobs at a lot of places and only ended up landing/taking the one where his previous boss could hire him at a top-10 program he was already familiar with. He doesn't wow in interviews AND he's picky.
3. I firmly believe that most of what Schefter et al. say on Sunday mornings about the NFL is more gossip (and, frequently, agent-borne gossip) than reportable fact.
It's provocative and gets people going, that's for sure.

4. This is a misquote of Schefter, who says Mullen is "open to going to the pros," not "hoping to go to the pros."

5. If Mullen were working toward going to the NFL and it were a sure thing, why would he fire defensive assistants whom he could just keep employed until his departure as a favor? Seems like a spiteful waste to let them go if he's skipping town anyway, no?
6a. Whenever you hear news reported that isn't arguably in the interest of public safety or truth too compelling to not have told, consider who it benefits to have it reported. Does Mullen have more leverage after a great season with a rotten end if he's coveted?
6b. Does it benefit the Jets, when speaking to other candidates, to have Mullen as a stalking horse? Does it benefit Schefter to pass along a message Mullen and/or Jimmy Sexton want aired?
