Chitral is home to many great forts which have been important in many conflicts, from ancient to modern.
They are still historically and culturally relevant today.

Chitral Fort
Built first in the 14th Century and then reconstructed in 1774 by Shah Katur II. It is located on the banks of the Kunar River and features the Palace of the Mehtar of Chitral and a boundary wall with many shikara watch towers.
The fort is perhaps most famous for the month long siege in 1895 when there was an attempt to overthrow the British backed government by an alliance of various local powers led by Umra Khan and Sher Afzal.
The siege would ultimately be lifted by a British expeditionary force.
The Two Forts of Drosh
The fort of Drosh was built over the Kunar River to protect the southern route into Chitral.
During the 1895 expedition, Umra Khan would built a second fort at Drosh which was eventually razed by the British. The two can be seen in this picture.
Mastuj Fort
The fort was located on the route between Chitral and Gilgit. It is a simple square fort that was constructed in 1780 although it is thought that this was not the first fort at the site.
Nagar Fort
Built in the early 1900s as the winter residence of the ruler of Chitral, Mehtar Shuja ul Mulk.
Located on the banks of the Kunar River.
Reshun Fort
During the 1895 expedition a cluster of houses in Reshun village was fortified by Lieutenant S. Edwardes and his troops to secure their positions as they were facing constant attacks from hostile locals.
There are also more ancient forts in the Mulkhow area which was the center of the region in antiquity. Some of these are:

Krooi Soon Fort
It was built on a mound and its walls were painted red so it was referred to as the Red Tower or Krooi Soon.
Muzhghole Fort
It is said to have been constructed by Bahman Kohistani in the 7th Century.

Noghore Zome Fort
Its name means "castle hill" and it is said to have been constructed by Sumalik.

Palmati Fort
The fort was built from the ruins of the Krooi Soon when it was destroyed.
Gumbad Fort
Constructed by Shah Akber Raeesi somewhere in the early 16th Century who used it as his residence.

Drashun Fort
Built by Muhtaram Shah in the early 19th Century from the ruins of Palmati fort.
