Apologies to those who follow for the football, but have to put a thread out on schools as someone with a fiancée and sister who are primary school teachers and parents now in the vulnerable age bracket.
Since September, my fiancée has been back in a full classroom of 30 kids with no PPE, no distancing between the kids as classrooms are too small, and only regular handwashing as a form of barrier to COVID.
She, like every teacher, wants schools open if they are safe, but they are clearly not despite the malicious lies that spout from the mouth of the Prime Minister.
This week she is being told by the government to return to work in an area with a much higher transmission rate per 100,000 than in many London boroughs that are shut, while her union is telling her to work from home due to an unsafe work place
The Government's lack of responsibility has put her between a rock and hard place, meanwhile parents have to live with the uncertainty of not knowing if/when the government will crumble into another U-turn due to their refusal to in their own words "follow the science."
No one wants children not to be in school, but there is a reason many other hard choices have been made to shut down businesses, travel, why most of us did not see family or friends this Christmas. The NHS is at breaking point & opening schools will only make that situation worse
The idea that teachers want this so they can have some sort of extended holiday is deeply insulting & inflammatory. If online learning returns, most teachers will be doing 2 jobs, going into school for key worker/vulnerable children, while maintaining a curriculum for 30 kids
Finally, we were all quick and glad to clap for the NHS. Start living & behaving like you actually care about it.
