This is definitely the most messed up new year's message I've received. Iit shows so much of what is wrong with @Refugees.

A (long)
THREAD

An agency tasked with protecting refugees & ensuring their rights finds optimism in a child being returned to a country that is as far from safe as can be. And they thank their donors for it. Donors who would donate to IOM if they wanted to support returns, not UNHCR.
(2/10)
Acceptance numbers of Afghan asylum seekers have dropped a lot over the past few years. Not due to a change of the situation or because the criteria for who is awarded refugee status has changed but bc of a change in EU politics and the resulting changes in our societies.
(3/10)
And now UNHCR, whose biggest strong suit is its huge PR apparatus, is using donations of people who did not succumb to these changes to resettle people into a war zone - and sells it as a big success.
(4/10)
They are furthermore abusing the picture of a baby whose parents most likely have no idea what kind of campaign it is being used for.

As wrong as this campaign is, the only surprise to me is why on earth PR experts thought this was a good idea.

I can only imagine what reading this must feel like for the people UNHCR is tasked to protect. My dear friend Mati, a young Afghan man who had 30+ pushbacks on our borders, having made it to Slovenia 5 times before chain pushbacks all the way to Turkey, had this to say:
(6/10)
"Oh dear God, it's absolute injustice and deprivement of refugees from their rights by UNHCR while being a an accountable agency for upholding human rights and human dignity. Pity having such leadership who turn a blind eye and condone the unprecedented hr violations"
(7/10)
If I was in the position of this family, I would prefer any hardship over this. Unimaginative injustice to this baby. If Afg. was safe, then most would not have endangered their life in the first place. But returning to Afg. in this situation is like burning someone alive.
(8/10)
But who is there to understand. I swear I love my country so much and most do, but when you are in a situation thinking I'm going to lose my life today or tomorrow, then who would choose to stay?
(9/10)
Believe me, one hour of time spent with my mother is worth more than the whole world to me.

The hypocrisy and double standard of these agencies and NGOs are far beyond imagination."
