Next potential #SWFC manager analysis thread is Paul Cook. Current bookies favourite and it’s reported that he has been contacted by Wednesday 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Most recently at Wigan but unsurprisingly quit following their relegation saga. An impressive 13 career honours won so far! (1/11)
Cook has 40 years of experience in football - 15 as a manager across 2 countries (Ireland and England). In terms of formations, he's fully committed to playing 4-2-3-1, in fact he rarely plays anything else. Known for his preference of a physical presence up top. #SWFC (2/11)
Cook’s style of play is mixed. Historically he's played attractive dominating football and has done so at Chesterfield, Portsmouth & Wigan in parts. Whilst he has been known for delivering winning attacking football on a budget he does enjoy a strong defence... #SWFC (3/11)
Think Wigan in Championship excluding back end of last season - Cook's 2 DMs cover the backline whilst the 3 AMs support the striker. Alternatively in recent years, Wigan have been somewhat attritional & direct at times. #SWFC (4/11)
The good:
*Cook has solid domestic football experience ranging from Conference - Championship.
*He is used to working on a budget & as a result has often turned to developing younger players released from their development teams (Williams, Robinson, Lowe, Kipre). #SWFC (5/11)
The good cont':
*Cook has experience of working in difficult situations – Wigan last year and Portsmouth languishing in League 2.
*He is a big motivator & character as manager. Arguably is this what our players need to succeed? They clearly have some talent in them. #SWFC (6/11)
The good stats:
*Cook’s career Points Per Game is 1.56 which is slightly below the likes of Carlos.
*A career win percentage of 43.4%, & Goals For/Against is 878:644.
*Combined 92 league tables from the last 3 calendar years, Cook had Wigan in 25th, 83rd and 39th. #SWFC (7/11)
The bad:
*Cook doesn’t have a plan B in terms of tactics - he is fully committed to his 4-2-3-1 approach. Do we have the right players for his requirements currently? Leftback and a physical striker are certainly weak areas for this approach currently. #SWFC (8/11)
The bad cont':
*Cook isn’t a guarantee of attacking football as wanted by DC. His output at Wigan over the last 2 seasons mimics #SWFC to a degree (high aggression, busy defence, low number of shots etc.). Would he be given time if we reverted to attritional football? (9/11)
The bad cont':
*Appointing Cook would surely mean the exile of Josh Windass given their poor relationship. Essentially would mean we would have to sell & source a replacement in January. A problem given our current striker situation. #SWFC (10/11)
Overall Paul Cook would be one of the better domestic options available to #SWFC. Certainly I have no qualms appointing him in the short term with his motivational skills. Longer term is he able to live up to the expectation of promotion from Chansiri? Makes my top 3 list (11/11)
