1. One of the most important stages of editing a manuscript (and following editorial notes) is getting a proper objective view of your work. To most authors, this means DISTANCE. #TenThingsAboutDistance
2. We all deal with the need for distance in our own ways, but it's essential to find thatsense of objectivity, otherwise your edit isn't going to work. #TenThingsAboutDistance
3. The most important ingredient is time. I like to have at least a couple of months to gain some perspective, but you may be different. Either way, work out what time you need, and take it. Don't let your publisher railroad you into working too fast. ' #TenThingsAboutDistance
4. That means making it clear to your publisher a long time in advance how much rest time you need before completing an edit. Otherwise you may find yourself getting stressed about deadlines, and you won't give the edits your best work. #TenThingsAboutDistance
5. During this interim time, don't even look at your manuscript. I mean it. Don't look at it AT ALL. Just read your editorial notes once, and then forget the whole thing. #TenThingsAboutDistance
6. If you can, work on something else. It doesn't have to be a book: it can be fanfic, or poetry, or short stories. But working on something new for a while is a great way to achieve distance. #TenThingsAboutDistance
7. If you really can't do this, take up a new interest. Sport, jigsaws, painting, box sets; anything that takes you out of editorial mode. Don't be tempted to look at your manuscript. #TenThingsAboutDistance
8. Don't neglect your reading. Read as much as you can - and choose books that give you pleasure. Remember, you're training yourself to approach your manuscript as a reader, not a writer. #TenThingsAboutDistance
9. When you're ready to go back to your manuscript, change the font. Not only will it help you see your work with fresh eyes, it will reinforce your new-found sense of perspective. #TenThingsAboutWriting
