Cows are considered sacred and are very dear to Shri Krishna. Also, she is given the status of MATA in Hindu Dharma.
Mata because her milk is fed to most of us. Breast feeding is the most supreme gesture of a mother and a cow offers us her milk.
Kamadhenu, the wish fulfilling cow, is shown carrying images of all the deities, thus becomes highly revered in Hinduism.

The Bhudevi or Mother Earth takes the form of a cow and goes to Narayana to seek his help whenever she is troubled by humans beings inhabiting her. Narayana assures her that he would look after her and thus, he takes Avatars every time he finds his beloved, Bhudevi, in trouble.
