1. Some of us have been arguing for effective safety measures in schools since summer in order to reduce the need for school closures. Measures advised by Harvard and Yale schools of public health, @WHO and many others. https://twitter.com/dr2nisreenalwan/status/1345661874302578689
2. Our efforts were dismissed by a government keen to invest as little as possible in making schools safe, enabled by a small but influential group of scientists who refused to advocate precaution and instead used marginal (at best) evidence to suggest schools were safe as is.
3. They were championed by a fringe parent group with odd political connections that was able to get extensive coverage in national newspapers and the ear of policy makers. https://twitter.com/parents_utd/status/1345015866782593032
4. Once again we learn the hard way that trying to spin our way out of a pandemic or do things on the cheap costs more in the long run. We should also know by now not to listen to minimisers who keep leading us further into the mire.
5. The NEU and others are absolutely right to inform members schools are not safe at the moment. Not just for staff, but for the wider community. The SAGE document makes it very clear children have been seeding infection in the community. https://twitter.com/neunion/status/1345667872882896896
6. The government must bring infection rates down and implement measures needed to make schools safe.

It made a song and dance about the importance of education, so hopefully money will not be a problem.

8. And here are the recommendations from Yale.

A responsible government will serve the interests of children, families, school staff and the wider community. https://twitter.com/adamhamdy/status/1304741200189108224
9. An irresponsible government will try to pit these groups against each other, threaten lawsuits, manipulate data and try and spin its way out of taking effective action.

Based on past performance, I don’t have much hope, but it’s a new year, so benefit of the doubt. https://twitter.com/adamhamdy/status/1341110308904054784
