Two years ago today, my debut novel OUTSIDE was launched into the world!
With my next book out in just two months(!) I thought I'd take this opportunity share advice to anyone debuting in 2021. It's a wild ride.

With my next book out in just two months(!) I thought I'd take this opportunity share advice to anyone debuting in 2021. It's a wild ride.
A thread:
1: We'll start with probably the hardest first: try not to compare yourself to others. You've written different books, with different strategies. Some books rocket straight into the charts whilst others are slow burners. Own your personal achievements.
2: Related to the previous - make friends with fellow debut authors. The best part of publishing for me to date has been the new friends I've made. Other writers going through the same thing can put context to your worries. And for the rest - there are margaritas.
3: Don't stop learning. There's a weird divide in writer circles between unpublished/published writers and I don't get it. Attend classes as you did before and continue to accept help - no writer knows it all just because they got a deal.
4: Know that the rejection doesn't stop post-publication (sorry!). This year will be filled with high-highs, but likely also low-lows. You've beaten the odds before and you can 100% do it again. Keep. Writing.
5: Finally - it's not all about your debut. Some writers will start with a bang, but if you don't - try not to worry. There will be other ideas, other books. You'll hopefully have a whole wide career ahead of you and it's kind of nice to have something to aim for, right?
I hope some of this is useful! My DMs are always open to new writers - if I can help at all, let me know!
Otherwise, good luck! You have totally got this
