My 1st ever thread so please be kind to me (!)

I’m just a bit tired of the number of judgmental and polarised views which have developed since #COVID19

The lockdown skeptics on one side, and those on the other side quoting daily deaths, demanding full lockdowns forever 1/10
I know the world feels safer and more comfortable when you are in a camp or a tribe but life is rarely as simple as this.

I grew up always being the outsider so I am familiar with not being part of a tribe. I understand it is a hard position for people to be in 2/10
It’s a perfectly reasonable position to be worried about the impact of lockdowns on the economy and education, as well as accepting the very real threats of #COVID19

Why can’t we accept that both are significant risks and work out the best way forward on this basis? 3/10
It’s also valid to support teachers in all they are doing for our kids, but be devastated by further school closures and the impact its having on our kids

Kids are regressing in both their social skills and their education 4/10
If my privileged, middle classed kids are struggling with their mental health and motivation, I dread to think what is happening in less fortunate households than mine

Schools should be the LAST to close and the FIRST to open. It’s the other way round in this country 5/10
In years to come, kids will be studying the history of this era and be writing essays on how we let down an entire generation of kids and young people

Unsupported physically from domestic abuse, and unsupported mentally with zero services available to them 6/10
Let’s now talk about face masks.

It’s easy to make snide under the breath remarks about someone not wearing a mask.

No-one knows their back story.

Are they a victim of abuse? Do they suffer paralysing panic attacks as a result of mask wearing? Are there special needs? 7/10
Why should people already suffering with any of the above be imprisoned in their own homes, rather than be judged by the #COVID19 police?

Mental health issues are just as important as physical but it’s not as sexy to tweet about these compared with ITU footage 8/10
Finally, I would just like to clarify my family has been personally touched by #COVID19. 3 members have been hospitalised and one member has died. This is unsurprising in the #bame community

I am NOT a covid denier but neither am I a zealot 9/10
I just want some balance restored and a strategy (any strategy) to ensure we don’t create a whole bunch of non-covid harms at the expense of protecting people from covid

Thanks for taking the time to listen 10/10
