when you’re a Japanese to English translator watching a subtitled show where “shikata ga nai” is always translated as “it can’t be helped” regardless of the context https://twitter.com/justintime4alaf/status/1345389991799775232
For non-JP speakers, this is my glossary entry for "shikata ga nai." (I make these for common phrases in case I'm getting writer's block or my brain's taking the day off. FWIW, I've only used half these in published work).

As always, it all depends on the context. #AmTranslating
Full disclosure: these days I've got like 400 entries in said glossary, and many of them just have two or three options I've thought of myself, but this one is oft-discussed and I've definitely added things other translators mentioned.
There's no one right way to make a glossary like this, but mine has JP / EN / Examples / Notes columns, which may or may not all be filled for a particular entry.
I sometimes make up examples or use an anime line I just translated, but many are from Kenkyusha.
