The whole “philosophy is rational debate” line is dangerous because it pushes out people for whom the discussion is high stakes. If who you fundamentally are/ what rights you have is being questioned by philosophers, being asked to be civil is insulting.
Of course being asked to be “reasonable” in a debate about their lives is nothing new for women, people of colour, transpeople and other marginalised groups.
This is also, ofc, very present in the myth of the philosopher as the rational impartial arbitrator of ideas, who sits in the armchairs and merely thinks things through in order to reach truth. No philosopher is impartial, and neither is the way in which we do philosophy.
