So... Someone sent me an item that seems to question whether a damn is built on Ethiopian territory. I'm assuming this is #GERD. I mean what other dam would we talk about? Well, let's try to look at this. Here's Google maps. The line is Sudan's border...
But do we trust Google maps? Does that settle it? Meh, probably not. I'm not the greatest person at reading maps, even though I used to work in a bookshop that sold maps, BUT... let's try history. Here is the famous mapmaker Stanford's map of the Nile, 1883. Check Sudan's border.
Here is another map of the border region, this time from 1911, a map published in Edinburgh. Trust me, one thing the English and Scots are good at, it's surveying.
Now, of course, we could do this the whole live long day, piling up maps showing the border region, and since the Brits were running Sudan until 1956... Let's assume the border was well demarcated then. This is also worth noting. Source: Water Technology. I mean do we really...
... think surveyors, contractors, engineers, officials, et. al. would risk building a HUGE project of this sort on the wrong side of the border? And after experts from Egypt and Sudan already got together in 2012 to discuss its impact? Don't you think that would have come up? 🤔
#GERD is what prompted me to stop playing it safe. I could have gone on plugging my books, etc., never saying a thing to piss anyone off, but I genuinely believe the dam will benefit the whole region, and Ethiopia deserves to get its own share of water and hydroelectric power. 🇪🇹
And BTW the Nile doesn't care whether you call that area Benishangul-Gumuz Region or what bitter internal disputes are going on between ethnic groups at the moment. Water is LIFE, and what matters is ordinary people of all types from all over will finally get better access to it.
