Okay some quick Dragon Ball Super opinions I wanna see if these are enough to piss some people (Mun) off so I'm just gonna go through every significant arc 1 by 1 (I will not be going over the movies just the anime and sometimes the manga)
The Battle of Gods and Ressurection F recaps are kind of hard to talk about because everyone already hates it. And to an extent I do too, the animation is atrocious and it's just boring and unremarkable...
However I can't deny there is some value to be had watching the recaps, there are some genuinely cool scenes and moments that aren't in the movie, but it's not enough to justify watching the arcs. It's fine to skip IMO
The Universe 6 tournament was.. Whatever, I suppose. I can't even recall much about it other than SSB Kaioken, which was cool and honestly the episode where I started to consider seriously investing myself in Super. Other than that, this really isn't anything to write home about
Copy Vegeta
The Goku Black saga is the closest Dragon Ball Super gets to the DBZ feel that Toriyama established 30 years ago. The story centers around one big bad villian, who's mystery is interesting and compelling, and this arc genuinely had me on my seat for what happened next many times.
Which is why it's so painful this arc ended so poorly. This arc was so good for the first 2/3rds of it's run, and it is filled with so many good moments and ideas. The win was RIGHT THERE, set up so well, and they completely fumbled it. It hurts so bad man...
It also doesn't help that the Arc is bogged down with so much bullshit. Trunks' Regression as a character is probably the most notable part of this. At the end of the Cell games, Trunks learned to have confidence in himself and to learned to stop relying on...
Other people to solve his problems. Trunks throwing away his sword and Bulma's jacket to fight Androids 17 and 18 as nothing but himself was symbolic of this change. Super then completely walks this back by running to the future to get Goku and Vegeta to solve his problems again.
I know Trunks couldn't have done much about the situation he was in, other than run to Goku and Vegeta, but I have to question why Trunks was so weak. Remember, this is the same series that gave Android 17 an UNBELIVABLE power boost for NO REASON...
And they couldn't have given that same treatment to trunks? He's a Hybrid Saiyan AND he just went through a character arc that made him realize his self worth and the value of growing as a person, and he hasn't even broke Super Saiyan 3 yet? It's just so bizarre to me.
The Recruitment Mini-Arc leading up to the TOP is probably the best DBS super Anime content from the mainline Anime. So much so that I really don't have any MASSIVE gripes with it. It's Dragon Ball to it's core and it's really enjoyable.
However, that's not to say it's completely flawless. The loops DBS jumps through to make these characters strong are so insanely ridiculous it's actually kind of entertaining in it's own way? Regardless, it's not enough to completely diminish the quality of these episodes.
The tournament of Power is probably one of the hardest things to discuss in Dragon Ball. On one hand, you've got a lot to like. It's a tournament where the main cast of characters are competing as a team and not against each other.
Most of these characters haven't had a lot of lime light for a while, so it's refreshing to see them on the big screen again.
There are also a lot of genuinely good moments that you can enjoy and appreciate, as well as some really good animation and fight choreography.
However, it's not like the TOP is consistently high quality or engaging. If I had to guesstimate, I'd say it's 25% gas. 60% decent to mediocre, and 15% total bullshit.
I'm sorry, but when you're in a Series like Dragon Ball, where the antagonists are given careful build up, personality, and styles to them, and you replace that with a bunch of random nobodies from places that I don't know and I don't care about, I'm not going to be engaged.
It also doesn't help that the Tournament of Power has some of the most lifeless and uninteresting antagonists from ANY part of the series, including the movies, and GT. Every Major antagonist from Z had something unique and interesting about them...
Frieza had his background as a ruthless dictator that destroyed goku's home planet and his transformations, as well as his unique move set that made him immediately interesting. He also had a great personality. He was well established and felt like he really existed in the world.
Cell had his background as the project of a mad scientist who had a grudge against goku to make him interesting. As well as the slow reveal of what he really was, and his copy cat moveset (as well as some unique moves), paired with his cunning personality made him interesting.
Buu's existence as a force of nature was an interesting change from Cell and Frieza, as well as his ability to use the cast against itself made him interesting, although it is worth noting that Buu definitely is the weakest antagonist among the original trilogy from Z.
Jiren and the pride troopers just don't have what the antagonists from Z have. He doesn't do anything new or interesting and doesn't have a cool or unique power or personality. He's super strong and serious and that is all he is.
If you like Jiren, thats fine (I know many of you do), but it is completely undeniable that Jiren just doesn't have what Made the antagonists from Z great. This is also compounded by the fact that he isn't a bad person and has no real motivation to fight goku other than he has to
I think that's why the Tournament of Power is so unengaging to me. Nobody participating really wants to be there other than the battle hungry saiyan characters. In Z, the Z fighters were really fighting for their lives and you could FEEL that, they really WANTED to fight.
That's not even mentioning that there are so many characters whose names I can't even remember and have absolutely no significance and exist just to get beaten and move on to the next fight. I challenge everyone to remember a character that aren't in the images below
I guess what I want to say is that, Dragon Ball Z was a show where fights were meaningful and felt like grand epic encounters with big imposing villains who had an interesting personality and powers that made encounters against them genuinely suspenseful.
I shouldn’t be able to say that Ginyu is far more compelling and interesting than Jiren.
It's also sad that it doesn't feel like anything from Super really matters or effects anything. All that really changes now is that Goku and the rest of the cast are miles stronger than they were before, but nobody really changed as people other than Gohan, I guess.
However, what I can say is that the Moro Arc completely rectifies every single problem I had with the DBS anime. The moro arc is genuinely great content, so much so that i actually think I enjoy the manga version of the Moro arc more than the Buu saga in the manga.
Thats the end of the thread, please understand I'm coming from a good place, and I Seriously want dragon ball to succeed and continue for the foreseeable future. And I am very satisficed with the manga and with current DBS content. I just dont want them to repeat the mistakes..
They made in the early arcs of Dragon ball super.
