So . . . I just applied for a social media manager position at @AEO, just because it has always been a dream of mine honestly . . . and I want to try to break a barrier.

An evening🧵and thought
Growing up, I saw kids from the mainland wear these clothes from @AEO, @Abercrombie, @HollisterCo, @express, @hm, etc. & it wasn't until college up in Rochester I had the opportunity to even WEAR one of these clothes.

I then had the opportunity to work for Express & @dsw_us.
Working in retail was probably the most pivotal and fundamental moments at the start of my marketing career.

Why am I saying this, and why am I tagging these retail companies?

I want to try to prove a point about accessibility with individualism.
Growing up and in college, I had limited access to finding my individual self, and clothes made me feel good.

Colors, textures, patterns, fits, seasons, etc.; it all made me feel good about myself and most importantly part of my story.
I can pull out an oxford burgundy dress shirt from @jcrew from my closet and tell you a story about it, where I've worn it, with what layers, and possibly how much I've spent.

High school and college me was different. It was difficult for me to envision myself wear any of it.
I felt I wasn't represented.

The color of my skin was a token to meet a quota, my body type wasn't seen in floorsets, and the models were Adonises that I wanted to emulate so I can be seen.

I felt that the everyday individual wasn't represented and I still don't think they are
So to @AEO, @express, @Abercrombie, @hm, etc. I hope you have a plan to showcase individualism of all shapes, sizes, colors, backgrounds, and stories.

Don't be performative about it, don't do it because of a quota.

Do it because there are kids out there looking to be seen.
I woke up this morning and saw all the responses, likes, retweets, etc.

Thank you so much for listening.

I'm not expecting much and I don't know what will happen. But applying again for a company that I admired back then and now brought a lot of bottled up emotions & thoughts.
Ohh and @Gap @BananaRepublic @jcrew @OldNavy also please take note above 👆.

But honestly, the GAP family has been doing one of the best jobs in organically and authentically showcasing their brand and story for an inclusive audience.
