In 2018, Iowa State Auditor (and amazingly, twitter mutual!) @RobSandIA defeated incumbent Republican @MaryMosiman by about 4.5 points. He did fairly well across the state, especially given that it is rare for a statewide Democrat to win these days.

This is impressive compared to Joe Biden's loss of the state this year by about 8%.
Sand outran Biden pretty much everywhere in the state - he overperformed in every county except Story and Montgomery. To get a better idea of where Sand had more electoral strength, we can look at the relative margin (how much Sand outperformed Biden relative to the state).
Sand outperformed Biden the most in rural areas across the state, especially in its northeast (including Sand's hometown of Decorah) and south. He outperformed Biden less in urban areas (Polk, Linn, Scott, and Johnson counties) as well as the staunchly Republican ...
, predominantly Dutch northwestern region and southwestern areas of the state. Another notable trend is in Story county, where Mosiman served as County Auditor in the 2000s. Sand underperformed Biden here by 5 points.
