Why be discreet? Of course this has happened.
Fandoms can be toxic places, and they can be scary for those involved (and those creating them).

Critiquing something (as opposed to criticising) is important for the growth of a piece of art. It's a form of love, not an attack. https://twitter.com/therisingtithes/status/1345558504841617408
I understand the desire to protect and stand for something you believe in, but discussion about the underpinnings of art is kinda the reason it's created. If we don't look at and query those underpinnings, we're denying the full power of it.
I rarely talk about it, (and I'm currently supposed to be writing one...) but I've had some really sharp rants about #Hunterxhunter on @GrandLineReview's New World Review and its portrayal of race and stereotype and gender.
Not once, though, have I said the series is bad.
I'm actually enjoying it. But there are elements that need to be discussed, because what we're willing to walk past without comment is what we're willing to accept in our world.

I think sometimes people forget that.
They forget that all of art and media is a representation of humanity, and the culture we want to invite and the world we want to live in.

It's why people take issue with D&D, it's why people take issue with Cyberpunk 2077, it's why people take issue with all sorts of things.
And often the reason people are taking issue with that thing is because they so desperately want to be involved in the enjoyment of the thing they're discussing, but it's hurting them.

Physically, culturally, psychologically, socially...it's hurting them.
When that hurt is shut down, the response is to disengage not only with the fandom, but the piece of art that in some way spoke to the person and invited them closer.
