The @chef that most #cheffriends identify with didn’t make it to 2021. The software continues to provide value to many companies. But, the impact it’s had on the people in the community will have an even longer impact.
I want to thank @adamhjk & @tmonk42 for founding the company, @jtimberman for being there from the start. #cheffriends
Huge thanks to @jesserobbins for hiring me and then doing the most uncomfortable thing for me at the time: leaving and making space for me to grow. #cheffriends
My first real introduction to OSS and the #cheffriends community was when @miah_ fixed a cookbook I’d published to the community site. I’d not met her beforehand and it was a magical feeling.
From there, it was @bryanwb, @lusis, @mattray, & the @foodfightshow who allowed me to take a more active role. @custominktech sent me to the first #chefconf where I was able to meet many folks IRL for the first time #hugops. #cheffriends
Side note: it was during this #chefconf that @sethvargo first joined my team. My first week as his manager was spent at a conference on the other side of the country. “Spend the week learning some @chef, I’ll be back in the office next week.” #onboarding #cheffriends
Then I took a training class from @lnxchk and we grabbed some drinks after. The place we went was super awkward, the conversation was super awesome. #cheffriends
I spent six years at @chef and learned so much, made so many lifelong friends, and grew in many ways. An era has ended but let’s celebrate the people who were all a part of it. #cheffriends
My time at @chef afforded me the opportunity to attend many @devopsdays and meet so many people in the community. #devopsdays #cheffriends
One constant over the years is @MikeRosTX. He’s been advocating for #DevOps and once was semi-responsible for me receiving a late night call from @TotallyNotKira, general counsel @chef. Note: getting paged by a spiking CPU is better than getting paged by your employer’s lawyer.
When #habitat was launching, @mattray and I co-presented at the Austin #DevOps meetup. I don’t remember either presentation. I do remember @pczarkowski catered with a full BBQ spread, including dessert. #cheffriends
Working with @elejia was a real pleasure. Seeing his commitment to the success of our customers, regardless of their tech stack, was only eclipsed by his absolute dedication to lifting up all of the humans around him.
I met @mattstratton via the @ArrestedDevOps podcast. He then joined @chef and got us kicked out of a country club in Phoenix where we were experimenting with a new type of customer event. I should clarify, the customer event went well and included homemade cookies. #cheffriends
I’ll never forget when @sigje came to a community summit. I’ve learned so much about empathy, #DevOps, learning, & collaboration from her and am totally fucking stoked to be working with her again. #cheffriends
#cheffriends and the folks from @puppetize usually got along quite well, often to the disappointment of others in the space. I’ve made friends like @eshamow, @richburroughs, @FeyNudibranch, and @thelongshanx all of whom I first knew when they were working at Puppet.
The first Puppet employees met was @geekygirldawn. She was@an absolute savior the first time we met. It was @fosdem and I had a terrible cold. “Oh, you can’t get good decongestant here. But I got you.” #thankyou
And then there’s @ahpook with whom I’ve shared many meals and drinks. I oncr tried to convince him the a free ticket to #ChefConf was in the addendum to an offer letter.

Of course, I gave him the ticket and there was no actual offer letter. Though we would have hired him!
In my early time in the community @fujin_ was very active. I think I met him at my first community summit, which was the second one. I’m not 100% sure he was there. I do remember mentioning much of his work on the @foodfightshow including this, almost 8yo(!), tweet. https://twitter.com/fujin_/status/311311580518285312
Hailing from my home state (MD represent!) and another early @chef employee is @mzyk83. I learned a lot about helping engineers grow from Mark. #ChefFriends
After years of contributing cookbooks and improving so many, @tas50 joined the community engineering team. It was a special time in his life (hi Jack!) yet he took the chance and has been tirelessly elevating the community, tooling, and cookbooks ever since. Congrats on the XC60.
So many great engineers joined @chef. Many, like @MacGoogly, from the Seattle tech community. I remember being part of many events at the office that were primarily for the community and Kyleen was usually there helping all our #ChefFriends
I first started using @chef, in part, because of the work @markimbriaco was doing at 37 Signals. Over the years, we’ve only met IRL a few times but I always learn something and leave wanting to work with him. Last time we met? @BeasleysChicken, I think. Remember restaurants?!
Working with speakers for #chefconf was an annual highlight. I’ve loved watching folks like @bnwoods2008 share their stories. And I’ve really enjoyed watching others realize how brilliant Brittany is.
One of the best parts of working in the @foodfightshow was that we could meet and chat with so many awesome #cheffriends. What’s up @spheromak?!

I learned so much about product management, putting users first, and prioritize the right things while working with @fishmegs. @honeycombio feels like a perfect fit for her, and many other #ChefFriends.
Awesome folks like @kgwalters continually blurred the lines between customer, community member, and amazing engineer. #cheffriends
I think I interviewed @kevinreedy in the parking lot of @JCTKitchen. )Fried chicken gets another mention in this thread).

Last time we got to hangout it was shuffle board with @trevorghess and @bleything.

Any guesses what we ate afterwards? #ChefFriends
Another awesome part of #chefconf was always the hack day. I remember @RanjibDey at many, including one hosted at @joyent where he and @jhulten helped us all focus on gratitude and supporting other #cheffriends.
I’ll always @UberGeekGirl at a community summit and before she joined @chef. Working together was a joy and her ongoing research, work, and dedication to learning are inspiring.
Working at @chef and having my identity so tied up with the company was great and sometimes greatly problematic.

Growing with, learning from, and making lifelong friendships with #ChefFriends was the absolute best.

I encourage you to share your favorite memories. #thankyou
I can’t get to everyone who deserves a mention in this thread tonight but y’all can keep it going. #ChefFriends
