so...i see a lot of people pointing at this scene and saying hydaelyn outright lies to us, and i dont think thats true?
worth noting is that this scene is in hw. even though its late hw, old things get retconned in ffxiv all the time. the writers can only think so far ahead. i dont think this is intended to be a lie - obfuscuating the truth, maybe, in that she doesnt outright say "im a primal btw"
there are, so far, two accounts of ancient hydaelyn/zodiark lore: hydaelyn's & emet's. i wouldn't take either one at face value. while i dont think either are purposefully lying, they are seeing events from their pov. hydaelyn from a primal perspective, & emet from a tempered one
so until we get an echo vision or something, all we have so far is narrator bias. but their stories line up in some ways.
hydaelyn claims that "before life, light and dark dwelled as one" - the only part that actively contradicts emet's testimony. she might not talking about herself specifically...however it does support this particular painting where hydaelyn and zodiark seem to be in harmony.
its possible that there was once a time where they coexisted peacefully. by emet's own admission, hydaelyn wasn't summoned to destroy zodiark, but to shackle him and keep him in check.
hydaelyn claims zodiark "broke the balance" by desiring power, & frankly i believe her. zodiark was summoned by people who were willing to feed him as many human sacrifices as necessary "for salvation". he wouldnt know when to stop. thats where hydaelyn comes in.
hydaelyn admits to banishing him, but says that it was not ONLY her but /their/ combined power that split the star into parts. she also says they were BOTH split this way, which is interesting. assuming that, then the rejoinings empower her as much as they do zodiark.

basically emet and hydaelyn's testimonies vary in slight ways but basically say the same thing. so...im not seeing the outright lies people are talking about, especially since we dont ACTUALLY know the truth
