ancient Roman Empire. But I always assumed that meant we get small, and pious (see Ratzinger on this), and then come back, maybe in a generation or two. But reading this, I see that Pariarch Scholarios thought the same thing. I am suddenly a lot less long-term optimistic.
What if the fate of the faith in the USA is the same as it was in Hippo during Augustine’s time? What if the new woke faith smashes all before it? Of course, this is all well beyond my lifespan, and I never expected the USSR to fall in my lifetime. Anything can happen.
But I am a bit shaken.
