Having spent a good chunk of my life traveling via @Amtrak for school it’s hard not to regard the new Moynihan Train Hall as anything but a major accomplishment.

It’s not really a “hall” but a sprawling complex. The sheer scale of the station is remarkable.

More downthread.
…it’s not as opulent as Grand Central or the Oculus, but Moynihan definately doesn’t feel cheap or slapdash.

There is a cohesive “modernist” architectual style that pervades the place and feels intentional, practical and beautiful….
…SOM and the rest of the design team were clearly very cognisent of the dreary basement feeling of Penn bc Moynihan is very bright & airy.

In fact, there is far more sunlight at Moynihan than at Grand Central, the Oculus or any other major US rail station that I can think of.
…I’m also a big fan of the artwork, which, unlike the new 2nd Avenue Stations, manages 2 feel both unique and also woven into the broader identify of the place….

Like the skylights, the artwork is positioned on the ceiling, giving passengers and visitors a reason to look up….
…its fun to see how many people were just there to take it all in… always a positive sign.

Good public spaces have this effect on people. People still go to Grand Central just to walk through it and experience its grandeur; the same for the WTC...
…I also like how tactfully transit displays have been worked into the overall design. Moynihan feels very much like a train station, not a mall.

Granted, many of the stores have not opened yet….
…there are definately things that can be improved. People who want to sit down will be very dissapointed.

There is also no bike room or facility of any kind, a major oversight. So, street racks still for #bikenyc… but I hope these can be fixed.
…the outdoor public spaces and entrances also have not yet been completed and much of the retail has yet to to open.

As @MikeLydon observed earlier, it will be interesting to see how the facility handles real peak crowds along with visitors.
