2020 was a tough year for in-person community.

Does Ratatouille the Musical offer a glimpse at the future of online/offline communities? 🐀

Thread explains why 👇https://twitter.com/ratatousical/status/1345008123329863681?s=20
1/13 Online community is flourishing. Why?

It has never been easier to find the group of people across the planet who share your unique interests.

Let's take the performing arts as an example 💃
2/13 Restrictions on venues have been devastating for shows and their audiences.

Where have musical theatre performers and fans headed to?

TikTok 📱
3/13 Talented performers from across the globe have come together online.

Communal magic, typically confined to Broadway and the West End, has been created.

Most recently, this community has co-created a hypothetical Ratatouille musical 🐀
4/13 Creators bounced off each others' ideas and techniques for songs, set designs and merchandise.

5/13 Yesterday, with Disney's blessing, this internet meme came together for a one-off live virtual performance. https://twitter.com/RothsReviews/status/1329830929775419392?s=20
6/13 It featured some of Broadway’s biggest and brightest talents ( @WayneBrady, @Instatituss, @Andre_DeShields).

It raised over $1 million for The Actors Fund 🎭 https://twitter.com/ratatousical/status/1345197450458501124?s=20
7/13 So what does this tell us about the future of offline/online community?

@packym has a really interesting way of thinking about this:

The internet = 'top of-funnel'
In-person = 'bottom-of-funnel'
8/13 In other words, building an online community around a shared identity is the best way to attract potential users 👷‍♀️

Some members of this community may then move down the funnel to become real-life customers in the future.
9/13 Those who are not interested in your product or service leave the funnel.

In doing so, you entirely derisk the threat of your in-person community being a fad.
10/13 As the world shifts in one direction, it often creates an opportunity back the other way.

@packym's essay on 'scenius' explains that the internet will not replace place-based rituals, such as the experience of going to the theatre. https://twitter.com/packyM/status/1262366537912127488?s=20
11/13 Ratatouille the Musical would not have existed without the internet.

Technology has increased access to musical theatre and brought success to performers who would previously have been ignored 🕺
12/13 Online will only enhance the importance of in-person interactions.

Once restrictions are lifted, new online relationships will strengthen with in-person interactions at theatres around the world 💕
