Thread on why Buck from 9-1-1 has ADHD, made by someone who has ADHD. ( #911onfox @911onFOX @oliverstarkk)
1. He's impulsive. Being impulsive is a huge adhd trait especially in boys. We tend to just go and do / say something without giving it a second thought or thinking about the consequences.
2. He's very emotional and I personally see him experiencing rejection sensitivity dysphoria. Rsd is when we perceive something as rejection and we get really upset. It's completely out of our control and watching this show I feel like buck experiences rsd a lot.
Touching on the rsd thing, I want to add that when we feel rsd, it's very intense and we get into a negative headspace and often do dramatic things on impulse to feel included or like we are being heard, which could be tied into why buck was trying to sue; he felt rejected.
Also touching on his emotions; he was rejected from becoming a navy seal because he "couldn't turn off his emotions." Adhd people are highly emotional because we experience emotions differently and at stronger amounts, which makes it very hard to "turn off" or change how we feel.
3. He's hyperactive. He cannot sit still. He's always bouncing or walking around, he's always fidgeting / stimming and messing with stuff. He talks really fast and when he gets excited he tends to get really hyper and moves around a lot.
4. He has trouble with organization. He's often very disorganized and clumsy and just places things everywhere. However I think it's easier for him in the 118 where there's set structures, everyday routines, etc.
5. He has problem with time management sometimes. This isn't shown too much in the show but based on his impulsivity and inability to organize well, i believe he'd have a problem with time management and would be time blind. However like I said, being in the 118 helps with that.
6. He's easily frustrated. He often gets in disagreements with Bobby and whenever he can't do something he wants to do; usually with doing something on a call.
7. He's a risk taker. He's often doing things that are dangerous and risky, especially on calls. He doesn't think before doing it which often gets him into trouble or in disagreements with Bobby. However, he usually ends up doing what he wants after persuading.
8. I believe he'd have trouble focusing on a task. In the 118 I believe it's easier to focus on things, but outside of that I think he'd have trouble focusing on One task and instead would jump from one to the other.
9. He has a lower maturity level. It's often that people with adhd tend to be a little immature, however we are mature in maybe other ways people aren't or in ways people don't necessarily see often. We goof around a lot, but we're serious and focused when we need to be.
10. He gets hyper focused. When hes really interested in something or trying to figure out something, he gets so focused and often spends hours thinking about said thing or trying to figure whatever problem hes having out. Not really shown in the show but I can see him doing this
11. He has trouble with relationships, which is common for people with adhd. He's often confused on maybe what he wants and how to go in the relationship, as well as getting too invested fast, and to others he's seen as "too emotional" or "impulsive".
12. He had a sex addiction. Though self diagnosed, it shows that its easy to get addicted to things, especially in adhd people. He went around and did what he did to hide the fact he was lonely and it was an escape for him, which is why people have addictions; to escape.
13. Idk if this is shown much in the show but I feel like he definitely likes to be acknowledged that he's doing a good job and that people appreciate his efforts. ADHD brains tend to thrive on being praised as well as having a "reward" for something.
14. He's very selfless, sometimes to a point he forgets to take care of himself. This tends to happen to me a lot as well as other adhd people. We try so hard to make everyone else happy and to do good in the world, we forget to take a step back and look after ourselves.
15. He jumps from topic to topic often, which is another sign of hyperactivity. When we have conversations, we often think about or remember something else and we Have to tell someone.
In conclusion; buck shows a LOT of adhd traits and I and many adhd / neurodivergent people relate to him. It's often that when writers write a character to be "immature," they tend to write an adhdcoded character. It'd be nice for buck having adhd to be acknowledged! #911onfox
