As someone who served on the pro-4e side of the edition wars, and was involved in early pre-public playtesting of 5e, I can say this thread is spot on. However, I can say the thing I enjoy the most now in hindsight is all the folks who have gone back to analyze and appreciate 4e. https://twitter.com/alyssavisscher/status/1345431679838523394
Even the phrase "serve in the edition wars" brings back specific memories. Yes, it sounds silly, but there were legitimately death threats, people saying they were going to report ethics violations of reviewers (sound familiar?) and just so much vitriol.
I made sure to make it a point when posting about 5e coming out that what the D&D community really needed was to figure out how to make it less toxic, and of course the folks who needed to do that were not on board.
Just gonna put it out there that if you response to me saying it was a difficult time for me was to go back and say "but 4e was bad, actually" even if you think you're making a joke, this isn't the right context for that discussion. (Like when we talk about Gleemax.)
