I have an underlying condition. It is not life threatening. My life is not worth less than yours because I have it. If I get COVID and die, it will have been COVID that killed me, and it will be just as tragic as someone dying who doesn't have one.
Disabled people, sick people... Our lives matter. You do not get to tell us we don't matter because we are different to you. The lack of compassion and decency in disregarding us as collateral damage the dehumanisation involved, is horrifying beyond words.
DISABLED LIVES MATTER
DISABLED LIVES MATTER
Your declarations that we are acceptable casualties in this pandemic are killing us. Your pushes and demands to go about your lives as if this isn't happening is killing us. You are killing people. Human beings.
I have a husband I adore, siblings and a parent I love, a grandmother I speak to every day, pets who make my days brighter. I like watching birds in my garden, making art for people to bring them joy, growing up to 100 sunflowers every year to brighten every day for my community.
I like marshmallows, chamomile tea, sitting by a log fire in the summer and watching trash on Netflix. I have interests in maps, technology, privacy, I enjoy looking at pylons and building things from scrap wood. I am a person with a whole, full life.
I am having to live mostly apart from my husband, who I miss desperately, because of the prevalence of this disease. Because people will not take necessary precautions, will not stay inside and away from people except when necessary. My life is on hold so you can enjoy yours.
This is the case for a lot of people in this country. We ARE already in the lockdown you suggest for us. And if you truly believe in saving people's mental health, consider how it feels to be shut away and alone. Particularly as poor mental health is common with disabilities.
By wearing a mask and keeping a distance you can make a huge difference to our lives, and everyone else's. They are simple steps which can save people. Save lives that matter. All that we are, we count.
Living as a potential collateral damage statistic.
I've put this thread into a blog post if you'd like to share it. This is just one life, there are millions of disabled people in this country. We are people. We have loved ones, pets, interests.. https://words.sophia.pictures/2021/01/02/pandemic-collateral/
