Lagbaja’s Súúru Lérè video pulls from a rich tradition of Nigerian political satire to tell us the history of Nigerian democracy
In 1979 Alhaji Shehu Shagari and his comically tall hat ushered in a new but brief civilian government and the second Republic of Nigeria.
In December of 1983, Major-General Muhammad Buhari seizes power and then in 1985 Ibrahim Babangida and his gap-tooth grin plotted a coup and curtailed all political activity.
In June 1993 the Military annulled elections when preliminary results showed a sweeping victory by a popular incumbent Chief Moshood Abiola.
In November of the same year, General Sani Abacha seized power and suppressed all who opposed him. In 1994 Abiola was arrested after proclaiming himself president.
In June 1998 Abacha died, and if we’re to believe the animation was assassinated by an Indian belly dancer who fed him a poisoned apple.
Finally, on May 29 1999 we entered the 4th republic which marks the restoration of a democratic system of government by the swearing-in of the first president-elect, Olusegun Obasanjo.
