So I was pretty obsessive about landing pages and stuff during my recent sale so I can track how different social media/paid ads performed. Here's the rundown (be aware it's rough).
I did some minimal stuff on Ello, LinkedIn, Medium, and MeWe. The only one that yielded results was the Medium article, and they were negligible.
I put in about the same amount of effort on Instagram and Pinterest. Insta actually did surprisingly well; Pinterest did zip.
Google Ads - eh, not much result but maybe covered their cost (maybe). Paid advertising elsewhere covered a third of its own cost. Won't repeat either experiment there.
Now we get to the stuff that actually worked. Facebook did okay; I paid for some advertising. Did that affect things? Not sure.
Youtube also did okay in driving traffic. I didn't pay for advertising, but videos are definitely more work. Still worth it, particularly since videos can provide stuff to post elsewhere.
Unsurprisingly my newsletter and blog drove a lot, as did mentioning it on my Patreon/Discord. But the queen in driving traffic and responsible for a third of the sales? Twitter. (Altho I put a good bit of work in there.)
Takeaways? 1) For writers, make sure you have your own outlets, like a newsletter or blog. 2) Social media effort seems best sunk into one of the big ones still: either Twitter or FB. 3) Paid advertising is (imo) a loser's game unless you really know your stuff.
Thank you to all of y'all who helped make the sale successful. I appreciate it so much!
