I know it’s been said 1000 times, but worth repeating: neither party has the capability to execute mass voter fraud. It’s simply too difficult of a distributed challenge. And states’ processes would catch even a minor attempt. Our elections are secure because attacks don’t scale.
But disinformation scales. And the Republican Party has decided to weaponize it against the United States. They all know—as a fact—that there wasn’t widespread fraud. They. All. Know. It. And they will continue to weaponize it for at least the next decade of elections.
I respect the hell out of the staff at the DNC. They are among the hardest working people in politics. But this notion that they, or anyone else, could concoct a systems-defeating Ocean’s 11 plot to strategically inject millions of fraudulent ballots is absurd. This isn’t TV.
You know what isn’t absurd? Conservative staffers, activists, and elected officials taking to platforms to lie because they lost. That’s actually quite easy.
There are many issues with how America votes. But it’s fortuitous that our distributed system defends against attacks at scale. This is true in a "normal" cycle and true in 2020. It's important to consider this when centralization or networking are presented as optimization.
No distributed system is perfect. Ours certainly suffers from exploitable design decisions & operational inefficiencies. Gerrymandering scales. Felon disenfranchisement scales. Draconian ID laws scale. Reduced early voting scales. Weights of the Senate & Electoral College scale.
Elected Republicans aren’t [now] trying to overturn this election. The entire GOP will spend the next decade lying about this election to try to make it harder for you to vote. They know the scalable exploits in the system. What we see today is an investment in those attacks.
Some very big twitter accounts have discovered this thread. Thanks for the attention! There will always be improvements we can make to our election security and accessibility! The work is never complete. But don’t let the egregious lies distract from real progress.
