THREAD: Does it look like the Mavs offense struggles with Powell on the floor? Probably because it does. He has the worst net rating on the team (-7.5) and the Mavs offensive rating is an abysmal 95.0. When heâs off the floor their ORTG jumps to 114.7
With WCS on the other hand, the Mavs ORTG is 129.9, and his net rating is a team-high 35.7. He plays less minutes compared to Powell (11.7 vs. 22.3), but it seems that teams are no longer respecting Powellâs rolls to the basket, which was his main value
I get that Rick trusts Powell, but given the Mavs slow offensive start, it may be time to see what inserting WCS into the starting lineup can do until KP gets back. We advocated for this in our offseason review and think itâs worth revisiting.
This will probably change when KP comes back but the Mavs are only running plays for the roll man in pick-n-roll situations 5.8% of the time which is down from 7.1% last year. The bread and butter of this offense is now spreading it across the perimeter and Luka drives.
Weâll see how this changes as time goes on, but the fact of the matter right now is the Mavs arenât running plays for the roll man and when they do, WCSâs height and athleticism is being respected more by opponents than Powellâs. And you NEED this to free up shooters.
This is not a shot at Powell. For years he provided good, smart rim rolling that helped the Mavs spacing. But coming off a major injury, his explosiveness doesnât look to be there right now and as a result itâs hurting the offense
