Senior investigators/laboratory researchers->what are you going to do in 2021 to support emerging leaders in your field, in particular those outside your inner mentorship zone?
Here is what I am going to do. THREAD
Here is what I am going to do. THREAD
1. Schedule every other week zoom lab meetings with other labs in the field focusing on junior faculty at other institutions. Follow up these meetings with new collaborations and career development discussions with the PI and lab members of the lab which joins us.
2. Develop new opportunities to remotely mentor a more diverse group of physician scientists pursuing a career in lab-based investigation->starting with myself and building momentum. More on this soon!
3. Continue to work with colleagues at MSK and especially my lab to provide research/training experiences for college students and medical students who have not had access to such opportunities. Including gap year(s), internships, and other programs.
4. Use social media and other communications platforms to continue to democratize the "behind the curtain" aspects of a career in science->share personal/career hacks on research, publishing, grantsmanship, career development, and learn from others who do the same
5. Accept all invitations to give zoom talks and career development discussion/panels from trainees at all levels.
6. For every invited scientific talk I accept to give, decline one and suggest an early career investigator as a better alternative.
What are your ideas, plans and priorities? How can we crowd source these and help each other mentor and support the next generation of scientific leaders? Comment below!
