It used to be once upon a time we talked about the economic dividend to streets and areas from Luas and transport investment. But its probably worth looking at #MiddleAbbeyStreet as a case that doesnt support that point.
Bleak and grimey, the mistake here was not widening pavements further and planting trees but also not following up with a push to engage building owners to improve the dismal condition of most of the properties.
A recent clean at the top of the street shows the potential at least. Windows are modern but at least follow a style appropriate to the terrace (largely rebuilt after 1916). The sole pre-1916 survivor here looks like it never recovered from its encounter with the Helga.
On the north side of the street, the grand frontage of the old Irish Independent remains empty. This was mooted to be a hotel under the Arnotts 'Northern Quarter' plan but that collapsed with the Celtic Tiger and the buildings have been unoccupied ever since.
An identikit hotel is actually being built to the west of Independent House at the junction with Liffey Street Upper.... the charmingly named Motel One.
