Yesterday, I started my 2021 training log spreadsheet, which led me to reflect on what I’ve learned over the course of last year:

- Set reasonable goals

- Nail the basics

- Form

- Log training sessions

- Good programming

- Recover, eat, sleep

1/
Setting goals:

For me, I have to keep it simple. I had too many goals in Jan 2020, as a result I got frazzled, and nothing got achieved.

After very little initial progress, I reassessed and set two complimentary big vision goals:

- ring muscle up

- front lever

2/
Nail the basics:

For my goals, I’ve had to get much stronger with pushing and pulling.

I’ve learned to appreciate the basics.

Shit doesn’t have to be fancy.

Get really good at pull-ups, push-ups, and dips, and get stronger in the process.

3/
Form:

Form is king. Record yourself, scrutinize, and go again. Ask for feedback!

I’ve struggled w/ trying to achieve too much too soon and sacrificed form. Always led me to have to take a step back in the progression. Not worth it.

4/
Log training sessions:

I used to be sooo bad at this. Didn’t write it down, thought I’d remember...Course I didn’t.

Logging my reps, my assist, no assist, how I felt shows (a) progress and (b) helps with programming the next sessions.

Can only recommend 😀

5/
Proper programming:

Strike the balance between progressive overload and avoiding overtraining.

I’ve had to learn the hard way and go by trial and error. Shot my grip strength a couple of times last year until I had the sweet spot...for now

6/
Recover, eat, sleep

Embrace recovery as a huge part of proper programming. It’s ok to take a day off and maybe just walk. Let the magic happen.

Eating & sleeping enough are also extremely important for the recovery process.

I hope this helps!

Here’s to happy and healthy training in 2021!

Let the journey toward our goals continue! 💪🏼👊🏻🙌🏻
