One of the people I’m most impressed by is Scott McClelland, president of H-E-B.

If you aren’t familiar with H-E-B, they are a local Texas grocery chain that does $31 billion in annual revenue making them a top 10 private company in the U.S.
There are two things that amaze me about Scott and H-E-B

1) Their logistics and supply chain during crisis response.

2) Their branding and customer loyalty.
Their logistics during Hurricane Harvey and the beginning of Covid-19 were nothing short of flawless.

Shelves at H-E-B were always stocked during both events.

They were gearing up for Covid months before it became an issue in the U.S.
They are also becoming a brain drain and bringing on the best talent to solve these issues.

I know some extremely smart petroleum engineers turned data scientists that left major O&G co. to work for H-E-B.
But it’s much more than that.

What other grocery store chain president gets on camera to lead people and assure the community that there will be ample supplies?
And when they say they are there for the community, they mean it.

During Hurricane Harvey, they crushed the U.S. gov’t and the Red Cross in delivering aid.
They deployed their disaster relief unit which consists of kitchens, water/fuel tankers and emergency groceries.

The mobile kitchens prepared 40,000 hot meals within the first few days.
I personally took people who were flooded out of their homes to a local H-E-B that started serving as a shelter.

You can’t buy that type of loyalty.
On top of everything they do for Texas, the shopping experience and the quality of products they provide also run circles around the competition, but that could be an entire thread in itself.
I don’t see how this company can ever lose when you have a leader like Scott and a company culture that aims to truly provide value to the people you serve.

Every business manager should be taking notes.
A quote I just found from Scott on their disaster response operations:

“That’s our job. We live for this stuff. We want the community to know they can count on us.”

What a badass.
