It took Houston a while to get organized after Hurricane Harvey, but we did it, w #lessonslearned. We had committees at the city & county level that set up neighborhood recovery centers w a robust #211 call center for info, w a support team of strong non-profits to be the horses.
I’m utterly certain similar med center teams are meeting to handle the ER, vaccine storage, staff vaccinations, etc, but we need a comprehensive, integrated whole-of-community, not just whole-of-government delivery system to push the shots out to everyone.
Every community center, school gym, voting location, church, as well as healthcare location, could serve as a COVID rescue & recovery center. This is a DISASTER, & disaster protocols would work. They aren’t the only way, but they are a way forward.
It’s also a model to distribute food & medicine. We in Houston should take care of our own, especially if the state & feds have abdicated responsibility for anything but pushing out shots. (If we are lucky, there’s some money for infrastructure we should build or re-up.)
Folks live in neighborhoods w/out cars, access to clever computers, portals, etc. They use ERs, or more likely, fire stations for their healthcare. Yes, that’s what I said-fire stations. Folks walk their sick kids over to the EMTs & FFs to ask if they must take the bus to the ER.
Both City & Harris County have done this before, w different specifics on deliverables. Metrics, dashboards w CVid stats & vaccination info every day.
We have what we need.
The county had a long-term planning & execution group led by @DisasterPIO & the crack Co emergency folks.
The City had a disaster czar from biz, w strategists from departments & leaders of non-profits. Folks sent senior leadership, w their best thinking & resources.
Houston will not let thousands of folks die, w ampules on the shelf & the med center & robust emergency response.
