Sometime in 1987, Lamba and Sanjeev Sharma participated in a Double Wicket tournament in Bulandshahr. The competition was stiff but Sanjeev remembers Lamba was equally determined to win the title. Every win was worth Rs 6000

Each win increased the booty. And attracted attention ! At the end of the tournament, thanks to Lamba's confidence and Sanjeev's bowling skills, the pair, having won the crown, was richer by sixty thousand rupees. In 1987 it was a big amount indeed

Lamba loaded the goodies gifted by the fans and the organisers in the back of the car and started for Delhi. The driver was slow. so Lamba took the wheels and drove quick. He loved to drive fast but never reckless. After some distance, he realized the car was bring followed

Three bikes. Six men. Lamba accelerated but knew it was not possible to shake them off. He sped off to a spot and suddenly swung into the fields on his left. The car was lost behind the tall grass. Lamba and Sanjeev watched the bikes drive past

They walked to a Dhaba nearby to have tea. The dhaba owner recognized them and cautioned them. It was a gang that was present at the ground and knew Lamba & Sanjeev were carrying cash. The money was tucked in the car but Lamba was rightly concerned about safety of life

After a while the 3 bikes sped past them, back to Bulandshehr. Lamba, Sanjeev & the driver resumed the journey to Delhi. It was scary, recalled Sanjeev, but Lamba was unruffled. That day Lamba vowed, "Never to play in such tournaments." He never did.
