Seeing that we had lots of "land", land grabbers were invited. They call in all shapes and sizes and carried out deforestation without anyone to question them. This happened over a period of 55 years from independence.

After 2004, our land under vegetation was considerably reduced and sold to various builders in the form of building complexes. I stay at a place that was a dense forest 25 years ago.
People were unaware and kept buying, some for need, some for investments.

Those innocent people who had surplus money, were sold properties in the name of investments. Especially NRIs.

We are told to not burst fire crackers, but farmers didn't know they could burn the stubble till they were "taught" to do so. Who taught them, is no rocket science.
