Is storytelling an important skill?

Thread 🧵
In 2009, a man, a journalist by the name Rob Walker wanted to find out this:

Is storytelling really the most powerful tool of all?

And in order to do this, he went on his computer and he bought 200 objects from eBay.
The average price of the objects was about one dollar.

He then called 200 authors and he asked them to be part of the significant object study.

He asked them if they would each write a story about one of the objects.

And 200 authors said Yes.
So now he had 200 objects and 200 stories.

He went on eBay again with all the 200 objects. He auctioned the items on eBay with the stories added to the description.

Can you guess what happened next?
One of the objects was a small plastic bust of a horse's head. Rob had paid just $0.99 for it.

When the story was added it was sold for $62.95. Increase of 6395%.

He bought the 200 objects for a total of $129, selling them for $8000.

And that's the power of stories.
How is it so easy for us to fall for stories?

The answer is that they play with our emotions.

Today there are many influencers and celebrities, they share their stories, their experiences and create large number of audience. They connect with audience emotionally.
Storytelling is also a part of our life.

There are many instances when you will require this skill.

You have to give pitch, you have to give presentation or something like public speaking, these are the opportunities where this skill is required.
So what do you think now,
Is storytelling really one of the most powerful tool of all?
