Chat around whether Manchester United under Solskjaer are worthy of where they are partly comes down to a weird schism cropping up more and more between those happy to view football in the moment, game-to-game, and those for whom success lies in continuation in the future.
What I mean by latter is this trend where true success is only validated by it continuing, and by being able to tie it to recruitment strategies, playing philosophy that extends beyond results, which are important, but feels as though it now overrides the here and now for some.
And funnily enough you could argue United under Fergie was about both of these things co-existing, even if the club's secrets to ongoing success weren't written about in the same way Liverpool's are now, or Guardiola etc. Makes you wonder how that era would be covered today!
Do think a lot of details about what made United great under Fergie are now lost to some extent in the mythologising of individuals, which is understandable, but just because there was no branding exercise to call it "Fergiepressing" etc, doesn't mean there wasn't more going on.
Although to be fair to this, I do remember some analysis at the time of the 06-08 team closing down opponents 'in pods', which was much like a lot of the analysis of teams that press today in a coordinated way long before that became the way to talk about it.
I'm working myself into a shoot around fighting the usual "Fergie was just a scary motivator who intimidated his way to success and nothing more" clowns here, aren't I?
