touching on dynamics of nonbinary identities: a thread!!! (by a nonbinary person that has mostly nonbinary friends, and has seen a gender therapist)
to start this explanation we need to go over the fact that nonbinary isn’t meant to make a trinary (a third binary). nonbinary. is, nonbinary!
other basic notes

-nonbinary people don’t always use they/them pronouns
-nonbinary people can use exclusively he/him or she/her pronouns
-someone using they/them pronouns doesn’t always mean that they’re nonbinary
here’s some terms that are used often amongst nonbinary people and the basics of what they mean!
-transmasc, means that they personally identify with a more masculine sense of self (i.e this can be a masculinized self expression.) and are afab.
- transfem, means that they personally identify with a more feminine sense of self (again. i.e this can be a feminized self expression) and are amab.
(note- you can nonbinary without being transmasc or transfem)
afab/amab: these are terms that we use to talk about our birth genders or how we were socialized while growing up. we don’t really appreciate other ppl using these specific terms to separate us into groups.
we are a group, we are nonbinary.
transmasc doesn’t always equate to someone being a trans man
and
transfem doesn’t always equate to someone being a trans woman
even further into this
- you can be a trans man and be nonbinary, the label often used to describe this experience is nonbinary man.
- you can be a trans woman and be nonbinary, the label often used to describe this experience is nonbinary woman.
here’s a little graphic to make all that a bit easier to understand for my fellow visual learners !!!
the selection of nonbinary identities is incredibly vast, and varies specifically from person to person!! that’s why it’s so important to not label us as “they/thems”!!! we have all sorts of mixes and matches that create groups of specific identities within our community.
also please don’t call us, as an entire group “enbys”. we largely prefer nonbinary. we are nonbinary. please use that word to refer to our community.
ignore the typos and missing words. it’s 4am. i’m autistic, and i haven’t slept. LOL.
OOOO ALSO nonbinary people don’t owe you androgyny!!!! we can dress however we want to!!!!!
