Inventing the scientific method had to be achieved against a constant headwind of innumerable human cognitive biases. That headwind never subsides.

So while science is often described as "self-correcting," that is only the case when enough scientists actually boldly defend it.
This is also why viewpoint diversity is so important in science. Different people will bring different sets of cognitive biases to the table. When everyone shares the same or similar biases, nobody is aware a bias needs to be called out.
And this is also why academia's current focus on racial and gender diversity is misguided. Science is not improved when people are very diverse in both melanin content and genital type, but are more or less ideological clones.
