Seeing a lot of anti new year resolution sentiment... And I get it.
But you know what, I’m a fan of resolutions. Goal setting does work. It just doesn’t work alone... 1/16

I love New Year resolutions.
Yes, most fail. But most people set goals & stop there. A goal without a plan is just wishful thinking. So of course most crumble at the first hurdle.
If you set new year strategies instead, you’re more likely to achieve your goals. 2/16

“I’m going to save more money,” is a typical new year resolution. But it’s vague and lacks strategy.
“I’m going to save into my ISA every month,” sounds better, but it’s still unlikely to happen.
This goal needs to be SMART... 3/16

“I’m going to set up a standing order to save 10% of my income into my ISA every month by Jan 31st. Once that’s done, I’ll review it quarterly on a budget & assets tracker that I’ll create today.”

Setting goals Is the first step towards creating strategy. Choose to gift yourself goals that are:
Specific
Measurable
Achievable (even if a global pandemic or some other surprise hits)
Realistic
Time bound
This increases your chances of achieving them exponentially. 5/16

Next, put the resources in place that you need to achieve your goals.
You may need to:
- schedule in time
- set alarms and reminders
- ring fence money
- find accountability partners
- protect your energy by eliminating other activities

Try it with this:
“I’m going to eat more healthy food.” How could this be improved?

Now you have a SMART goal and a bit of a strategy, think about how you’ll end the year.
If you haven’t already reviewed 2020, do it today. Annual reviews make a huge difference both personally and professionally.

Most of us don’t see how far we’ve progressed. Reviews help. I use @YearCompass.
Sitting on a beach & planning 2020 gave me big, lofty goals... but strategic planning introduced realism.
Despite 2020 being 2020, I was able to achieve many of my goals. How? Strategy >>>

The strategy needed to be tweaked of course & expectations managed. But I really appreciated the outcome of my planning.
I reviewed this year and was pretty happy with how it went. I forgot I’d achieved so much. 10/16
